Clarity

The Art of Diamonds

A journey into light, proportion, and story.

Clarity

Clarity refers to the degree of imperfections — or inclusions — found within and on the surface of a diamond. These natural characteristics can take many forms, such as dots, clouds, feathers, or crystals. The rarest diamonds are graded internally and externally flawless.

Next on the scale are diamonds with very slight inclusions: ranging from VVS1 (very very slightly included) to VS2 (very slightly included). While technically distinct, all diamonds in the VS range are exceptionally rare, with inclusions that are difficult to detect even under magnification.

The majority of diamonds fall into the SI1 and SI2 (slightly included) categories. Inclusions at this level can range from easily visible to nearly invisible without a loupe, which is why it’s crucial to view these stones in person.

Finally, I1 through I3 (included) diamonds have more obvious internal features, which increase as you move down the scale. Beyond grading, what matters most is the nature and location of an inclusion — some are discreetly placed or easily masked by settings, while others may affect transparency or structural integrity.
